EXCURSIONS 2019

Welcome to the exiting and adventurous Sisimiut. Our excursions are designed to reflect our Inuit culture and modern life, the enormous landscape that surrounds Sisimiut and the food that we love in a set up that accommodates bigger groups from cruise ships and the passenger’s demands and expectations.

Small Boat Cruise to Assaqutaq

In the 1960s and 1970s, several small settlements in Greenland were abandoned as people chose to move to the larger towns to find work. Assaqutaq, beautifully situated at the foot of the Nasaasaaq Peak on the south side, is one of these settlements.
Today it is used as a summer camp for the local primary schools and, particularly in June, the place comes alive again as people from Sisimiut go there to fish ammassat (capelin).
We go on a small boat with only 12 passengers. You can stand outside or go inside during the cruise to and from Assaqutaq. On the short walk through the abandoned settlement, you see the old fish factory, the traditional little cemetery for its time and area, the house currently used as a summer camp and the old church.

Cultural Historical Hike

In spite of Greenland’s enormous size, human beings have chosen the very same spots for their settlements through time.
The Tele Island, Sallinnguit, is one of those sites where ancient and modern cultures meet. Inuit inhabitants have lived at the site intermittently for the past 4.000 years. Even today, you can find artifacts bearing witness to the ancient habitation side by side with the modern telecommunications installations that have given the island its modern Danish name.
Hear the story of the life of the Inuit before the advent of the Europeans, and of life in the early days of colonization. See the ruins from different periods and enjoy the beautiful views over the town and the ancient hunting grounds.
