Snowmobile – Davis Strait northbound
The best snowmobile area in Greenland.
Experience the landscapes of the glaciers and the deep fjords which are the trademarks ofthe city of Sisimiut.
On this trip, we’ll drive through the highlands east of Sisimiut. Here we’ll pass the town’s ski area and drive to the outlook of 1st fjord “Kangerluarsuk Tulleq” where there will be a brief photo stop. After a steep descent and some technical turns, we’ll reach the fjord ice which runs north, towards the mountains between 1st fjord and 2nd fjord “Kangerluarsuk Ungalleq”. From the edge of the ice we’ll head to the mountains, where the terrain offers nice and exciting driving. On the route to the 2nd fjord, we’ll pass an old hunting cabin that is marked by wind and weather. After a descent, we’ll reach the 2nd fjord, from where we’ll drive east against Tasersuaq – the Great Lake.
Along the way we pass the hydroelectric plant that supplies Sisimiut with pure CO2 neutral electricity. The actual power station is built into the mountain, which makes turbines, generators and the 7 km tunnels completely invisible from the outside. The only thing that reveals the power plant’s presence, are buildings with staff entrance and power pylons. After the power station, we’ll drive through a large field of huge boulders, which are the remains of a huge landslide.
We’ll be able to look beyond a huge lake, which local hunters sails along during the annual caribou hunt, In August and September, to spare themselves for a long hike. The area north of the lake, has a very high stock of caribous, and is called caribou country. There is also located a surveying research center on the north side of the lake, where there is a great chance to see Caribous on the mountainsides.
From this lake, we’ll drive back to the 2nd fjord where there is a tourist hut. Here we’ll take a brake to eat our packed lunch and get some hot beverage, and then we’ll head home to Sisimiut.
